TimeOutYour time. Your breaks. Your freedom.

A free clock-out timer for your workday

TimeOut is a free online work shift countdown. Set your start and end times, add lunch and breaks, and see how long you have until clock-out. It works in your browser with no account or subscription.

How to set your work shift timer

  1. Choose your work hours. Open TimeOut and select “Start my countdown.” Enter the local time your shift starts and ends.
  2. Add your breaks. Set the start and end of your first break, lunch, and second break. Switch off any you do not use. Keep enabled breaks within your shift, in order, without overlaps.
  3. Start the countdown. Select “Start my countdown” to see your end-of-shift timer, break timers, progress bar, and schedule. Use the settings button to edit your hours later.

Your schedule is remembered on this device. The pause button freezes the display, while the real shift clock continues. Use the sound and notification buttons for optional reminders.

How much time is left until clock-out?

Subtract the current local time from your scheduled end time. If it is 3:45 PM and you finish at 5:00 PM, you have 1 hour and 15 minutes left. TimeOut updates that countdown as the clock advances.

Example clock-out countdowns
Current timeShift endsTime remaining
3:45 PM5:00 PM1 hour, 15 minutes
4:59:30 PM5:00 PM30 seconds
11:30 PM6:00 AM next day6 hours, 30 minutes

The main timer includes breaks because clock-out happens at a fixed time. For a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM shift, the full clock-time span is eight hours even if lunch lasts an hour. Paid work hours are a separate calculation.

Work timer questions, answered

What is TimeOut?

TimeOut is a free online work shift timer. It shows the time until your shift ends, counts down to your first break, lunch, and second break, and displays your daily schedule and shift progress.

How do I set a clock-out countdown?

Open TimeOut, choose Start my countdown, enter your shift start and end times, and set or disable each break. Select Start my countdown again to open the timer. The large number shows the time until clock-out; before your shift, it counts down to the start.

Is the work timer free? Do I need an account?

TimeOut is free to use. You do not need an account, a subscription, or a credit card. Your schedule and sound and notification preferences are saved in this browser.

Does the clock-out timer subtract lunch and breaks?

The main countdown measures clock time until your shift ends, so it includes lunch and breaks. Each break has its own countdown. TimeOut is not a paid-hours calculator, timesheet, or payroll system.

Can I use TimeOut for an overnight shift?

Yes. If your shift ends earlier on the clock than it starts, TimeOut treats the end as the next day. For example, a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM crosses midnight. Set your break times within that shift.

Which time zone does the timer use?

TimeOut uses the date, time, and time zone of your device. Enter the schedule in that local time zone. Changing your device clock or time zone can change the countdown.

Does pausing the display pause my shift?

No. Pause freezes the displayed countdown. The real schedule and enabled alerts continue to use the current time. Resume brings the display back to the live countdown.

Will break reminders work after I close the tab?

Keep TimeOut open for reminders. Sound depends on browser audio permissions, and desktop notifications require your permission and browser support. Sleeping devices and background tabs can delay alerts; closing the app stops them.

What happens when my shift ends?

During the final minute, the main timer shows seconds only. The last 10 seconds turn red and shake, unless reduced motion is enabled. At the end, the numbers become Time Out!, and completed breaks and schedule steps remain visible.

Does TimeOut clock me out at work?

No. TimeOut is a personal countdown clock. It does not record attendance, submit timesheets, or connect to your employer's clock-in or clock-out system. Follow your workplace's normal clock-out process.

Your schedule and privacy

TimeOut saves your schedule and sound and notification preferences in local storage in this browser. The app does not send that schedule to a schedule database or sync it between devices. Clearing this site's browser data removes those saved settings. Reset schedule removes the saved shift.

Notification permission is controlled by your browser. The site loads fonts from Google Fonts, and the hosting service handles normal web requests and may log requests or errors. Use your browser's site settings to manage stored data and notification permission.

Your next break is worth counting down to.
